1Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

1‌ʻE Kāinga ʻofeina, ʻoua naʻa tui ki he laumālie kotoa pē, kae ʻahiʻahiʻi ʻae ngaahi laumālie, pe ʻoku ʻoe ʻOtua ʻakinautolu: koeʻuhi kuo tokolahi ʻae kau palōfita loi kuo ʻalu atu ki māmani.

2By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,

2Ko e meʻa eni ʻoku mou ʻilo ai ʻae laumālie ʻoe ʻOtua: Ko e laumālie kotoa pē ʻoku fakahā kuo haʻu ʻa Sisu Kalaisi ʻi he sino, ʻoku ʻoe ʻOtua ia:

3and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.

3Pea ko e laumālie kotoa pē ʻoku ʻikai fakahā kuo haʻu ʻa Sisu Kalaisi ʻi he sino, ʻoku ʻikai ʻoe ʻOtua ia: pea ko eni ia ʻae Fili ʻo Kalaisi, ʻaia kuo mou fanongo ki ai ʻe haʻu; pea ʻoku lolotonga ni ʻene ʻi māmani.

4Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

4‌ʻE fānau ʻofeina, kuo ʻae ʻOtua ʻakimoutolu, pea kuo mou ikuna ʻakinautolu: he koeʻuhi ko ia ʻoku ʻiate kimoutolu, ʻoku lahi ia kiate ia ʻoku ʻi māmani.

5They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them.

5‌ʻOku ʻoe māmani ʻakinautolu: ko ia ʻoku nau lea ai ki māmani, pea fanongo ʻa māmani kiate kinautolu.

6We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

6‌ʻOku ʻoe ʻOtua ʻakimautolu: ko ia ʻoku ne ʻiloʻi ʻae ʻOtua, ʻe fanongo ia kiate kimautolu; pea ko ia ʻoku ʻikai ʻoe ʻOtua, ʻoku ʻikai fanongo ia kiate kimautolu. Ko e meʻa eni ʻoku tau ʻilo ai ʻae laumālie ʻoe moʻoni, mo e laumālie ʻoe hē.

7Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.

7‌ʻE kāinga ʻofeina, ke tau feʻofaʻaki kiate kitautolu: he ʻoku mei he ʻOtua ʻae ʻofa; pea ko ia kotoa pē ʻoku ʻofa, kuo fanauʻi ia ʻi he ʻOtua, pea ʻoku ne ʻiloʻi ʻae ʻOtua.

8Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.

8Ko ia ʻoku ʻikai ʻofa, ʻoku ʻikai ʻiloʻi ʻe ia ʻae ʻOtua; he ko e ʻOtua ko e ʻofa.

9In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.

9Ko eni ia naʻe fakahā ai ʻae ʻofa ʻae ʻOtua kiate kitautolu, koeʻuhi naʻe fekau ʻe he ʻOtua ʻa hono ʻAlo pe taha naʻe fakatupu ki he māmani, koeʻuhi ketau moʻui ʻiate ia.

10In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

10Ko eni ʻae ʻofa, naʻe ʻikai ko ʻetau ʻofa ki he ʻOtua, ka ko ʻene ʻofa kiate kitautolu, ʻo ne fekau hono ʻAlo ko e feilaulau totongi ʻi heʻetau angahala.

11Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

11‌ʻE kāinga ʻofeina, kapau naʻe pehē ʻae ʻofa ʻae ʻOtua kiate kitautolu, ʻoku totonu foki ʻetau feʻofaʻaki.

12No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.

12Kuo ʻikai ha taha ʻe mamata ki he ʻOtua ʻi ha kuonga. Kapau ʻoku tau feʻofaʻaki, ʻoku nofoʻia ʻakitautolu ʻe he ʻOtua, pea kuo fakahaohaoaʻi ʻene ʻofa ʻiate kitautolu.

13By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.

13Ko eni ʻae meʻa ʻoku tau ʻilo ai ʻoku tau nofo ʻiate ia, pea mo ia ʻiate kitautolu, koeʻuhi kuo ne foaki kiate kitautolu ʻa hono Laumālie.

14And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.

14Pea kuo mau mamata, mo fakahā, kuo fekau ʻe he Tamai ʻae ʻAlo ko e Fakamoʻui ki he māmani.

15Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.

15Ko ia ia te ne fakahā ko e ʻAlo ʻoe ʻOtua ʻa Sisu, ʻoku nofo ʻae ʻOtua ʻiate ia, pea mo ia ʻi he ʻOtua.

16So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

17By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world.

17‌ʻI he meʻa ni ʻoku fakahaohaoa ʻae ʻofa ʻiate kitautolu, koeʻuhi ke tau loto mālohi ʻi he ʻaho ʻoe fakamaau: koeʻuhi ʻoku tau hangē ko ia ʻi he māmani.

18There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.

18‌ʻOku ʻikai ha manavahē ʻi he ʻofa; ka ʻoku tekeʻi atu ʻae manavahē ʻe he ʻofa haohaoa: he ʻoku ʻi he manavahē ʻae mamahi. Ko ia ia ʻoku manavahē, ʻoku teʻeki ke fakahaohaoa ia ʻi he ʻofa.

19We love because he first loved us.

19‌ʻOku tau ʻofa kiate ia, koeʻuhi ko ʻene tomuʻa ʻofa mai kiate kitautolu.

20If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.

20Kapau ʻe pehē ʻe ha taha, ʻOku ou ʻofa ki he ʻOtua, ka ʻoku fehiʻa ki hono tokoua, ko e loi ia: he ko ia ʻoku ʻikai ʻofa ki hono tokoua kuo ne mamata ki ai, ʻe fēfē ʻene ʻofa ki he ʻOtua naʻe ʻikai te ne mamata ki ai?

21And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.

21Pea ko e fekau ni ʻoku tau maʻu meiate ia, Ko ia ia ʻoku ʻofa ki he ʻOtua, ke ʻofa foki ia ki hono tokoua.
