1Then Job answered and said:
1PEA naʻe tali ʻe Siope, ʻo ne pehē,
2“No doubt you are the people, and wisdom will die with you.
2Ta ko kimoutolu pe ʻae kakai, pea ʻe mate mo kimoutolu ʻae poto.
3But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you. Who does not know such things as these?
3Ka ʻoku ai hoku loto ʻo hangē pe ko kimoutolu; ʻoku ʻikai teu siʻi hifo au kiate kimoutolu: ʻio, ko hai ʻoku ʻikai ke ne ʻilo ki he ngaahi meʻa pehē ni?
4I am a laughingstock to my friends; I, who called to God and he answered me, a just and blameless man, am a laughingstock.

5In the thought of one who is at ease there is contempt for misfortune; it is ready for those whose feet slip.

6The tents of robbers are at peace, and those who provoke God are secure, who bring their god in their hand.
6ʻOku monūʻia ʻae ngaahi fale ʻoe kau kaihaʻa, pea ʻoku nofo fiemālie pē ʻakinautolu ʻoku fakahouhau ki he ʻOtua; ʻoku ʻatu lahi ʻe he ʻOtua ki honau nima.
7“But ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you;

8or the bushes of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you.

9Who among all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this?

10In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.

11Does not the ear test words as the palate tastes food?
11ʻIkai ʻoku ʻahiʻahiʻi ʻe he telinga ʻae ngaahi lea? Pea kamata ʻe he ngutu hono kai?
12Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding in length of days.
12Pea ʻoku ʻiate ia ʻoku talu mei muʻa ʻae poto; pea ko e ʻilo ʻi he ngaahi ʻaho lahi.
13“With God are wisdom and might; he has counsel and understanding.
13“ʻOku ʻiate ia ʻae poto mo e mālohi, ʻoku ʻiate ia ʻae fakakaukau mo e ʻilo.
14If he tears down, none can rebuild; if he shuts a man in, none can open.
14Vakai, ʻoku ne holoki hifo, pea ʻe ʻikai faʻa toe fokotuʻu ia: ʻoku ne tāpuni ki he tangata, pea ʻoku ʻikai ke faʻa matoʻo.
15If he withholds the waters, they dry up; if he sends them out, they overwhelm the land.
15Vakai, ʻoku ne taʻofi ki he ngaahi vai, pea matuʻu ia: ʻoku ne fekau atu foki ia, pea ʻoku fulihi ʻe ia ʻae fonua.
16With him are strength and sound wisdom; the deceived and the deceiver are his.
16ʻOku ʻiate ia ʻae mālohi mo e poto, ʻoku ʻoʻona ʻae kākāʻia mo ia ʻoku kākā.
17He leads counselors away stripped, and judges he makes fools.
17ʻOku ne taki pōpula ʻae kau fakakaukau, pea ne fakavaleʻi ʻae kau fakamaau.
18He looses the bonds of kings and binds a waistcloth on their hips.
18Ko e haʻi ʻoe ngaahi tuʻi kuo ne vete, ka ne haʻihaʻi honau noʻotanga vala ʻaki ʻae haʻi.
19He leads priests away stripped and overthrows the mighty.
19ʻOku ne taki pōpula ʻae ngaahi houʻeiki, pea ʻoku ne lī ki lalo ʻae mālohi.
20He deprives of speech those who are trusted and takes away the discernment of the elders.
20ʻOku ne toʻo atu ʻae lea ʻae kau poto, pea toʻo mo e ʻilo ʻae mātuʻa.
21He pours contempt on princes and loosens the belt of the strong.
21ʻOku ne lilingi ʻae manukia ki he ngaahi houʻeiki, pea ne vete ʻae noʻo ʻoe mālohi.
22He uncovers the deeps out of darkness and brings deep darkness to light.
22ʻOku ne fakahā ʻae ngaahi meʻa lilo mei he fakapoʻuli, pea ne ʻomi ki he maama ʻae ʻata ʻoe mate.
23He makes nations great, and he destroys them; he enlarges nations, and leads them away.
23ʻOku ne fakatokolahi ʻakinautolu ʻoku ne fakalahi ʻae ngaahi puleʻanga, pea toe fakasiʻisiʻi ia.
24He takes away understanding from the chiefs of the people of the earth and makes them wander in a pathless waste.
24ʻOku ne toʻo ʻo ʻave ʻae loto ʻoe ngaahi ʻeiki ʻoe kakai ʻo māmani, ʻo ne pule ke nau ʻalu fano ʻi ha toafa taʻehahala.
25They grope in the dark without light, and he makes them stagger like a drunken man.
